**** Audition by Barbara Walters (2009, First Vintage Books, 628 pages)
This is legendary broadcaster Barbara Walter's autobiography. While some ChickLitChickFlick fans might know very little about Ms. Walters, she is an extremely influential broadcaster. She also introduced the celebrity interview and has interviewed the world's leading political, business and entertainment figures.
Today, many ChickLitChickFlick fans know Ms. Walters best as a co-host of The View, but that is just a sliver of who this grand dame of media is.
Ms. Walters' autobiography is an easy read, despite its length. She delves into everything from her feelings about a mentally-delayed sibling, to a once-strained relationship with her adopted daughter, to being harrassed at work, possibly because of her gender. Ms. Walters also offers the inside scoop
on some of the personalities she has interviewed over the years.
Whether you're interested in media or not, Barbara Walters is such an influential figure in shaping how women are perceived, that this autobiography is worth a read if you're looking for a break from flossy
fiction.
You'll also learn that finding love, relationships and Mr. Right are tough for everyone, even women who seem to have it all.
I didn't know more than the average person of my vintage (30s) about Barbara Walters before picking up this book.
Indeed, I wouldn't have picked it up if a good friend hadn't recommended it. That being said, this is definitely worth reading, and even adding to your Chick Lit collection.
