** Mr. Maybe by Jane Greeen (2002, Broadway Books, 357 pages)
I picked up this Chick Lit at a local discount bookstore this week-end.
I wondered why it was so cheap ($6.00), as it was brand new, but now I
know the discount had to do with the stale date of publication -- 2002.
The book has a few references to the 1990s, such as the technology of the day, which can be distracting. That being said, this is actually a decent read. If you're in your twenties (as someone in her thirties, I felt it a bit immature) and you've settled for someone -- or thought about settling-- you'll get a kick out of Libby Mason's (mis)adventures.
Libby opts for a no-committment relationship with a guy who is broke. This wouldn't be a problem as the guy is a gem, but Libby's always dreamt of being with a rich guy. When the poor guy fling ends, Libby starts a relationship with a wealthy bloke. Problem is, he's not good-looking -- not even average, needs work in the bedroom department, and her friends don't really get why she's with him.
Mr. Maybe might be a little predictable, but for Chick Lit fans, it's entertaining to see how Libby pulls herself out of a sticky situation and learns about herself.
If you can get this book at the library, from a friend or for a deep discount, it's worth a read.
I have read some of Ms. Green's other works and will be on the look out for others. If Chick Lit fans haven't read Ms. Green's Jemima J., do pick it up. It's more of an indulgece than Mr. Maybe.
